Simple, Good, and Tasty Launches Book Club with Mississippi Market Co-op

We're excited to announce the launch of a brand new club in town - ours! Simple, Good, and Tasty - in partnership with the good folks at Mississippi Market Co-op in St. Paul, MN - is launching a book club focused on local, organic, sustainable, fair trade, healthy food books (we can think of about a thousand to start). We think a book club and discussion is a fantastic way to engage the community and get people talking about food in our families, our culture, our homes, and our markets.

For our first book, we've chosen Michael Pollan's brand spanking new "Food Rules." It's a short, excellent read, focused on the ways that traditional cultures and practices can help us eat right. Example food rules include:

  • #20: It's not food if it arrived through the window of your car.
  • #39: Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.

Michael Pollan is a terrific starting point for anyone, and "Food Rules" is incredibly engaging, informative, and entertaining - it's an easy conversation starter, perfect for our first book club discussion.

Here are the details:

  • What: Simple, Good, and Tasty's book club, in partnership with Mississippi Market
  • When: February 25, from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
  • Where:  Mississippi Market Co-op, Selby Community Room, 622 Selby Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104
  • Cost: Free, except for the book (you provide that yourself). Snacks provided by the co-op.
  • Register: By calling the co-op directly at 651-310-9499 or 651-690-0507. Space is limited. See you there!

We're also working at putting book notes and talking points online so you can host your own Simple, Good, and Tasty book club wherever you are. Please contact us at info@simplegoodandtasty.com for more information.

thanks susan, hope to see you there!

I just read this book yesterday, it was full of great ideas and yet a nice easy read. Hope I can make it to the book group as I think it sounds like a great idea!

i hope so too, thanks kate!

We'd love to do this once we have our new community room/classroom in Linden Hills Co-op's new location, Lee! Let us know how it's going at Ms Market!

our goal is to eventually move around the location - when the other coops are ready. jeanne, just say the word!

Such a fantastic idea! Will it meet monthly?

yes, it will! are you coming? want to start your own SGT bookclub?

super cool! love this idea - keep it going! ;)

Love the idea. So much good writing about the emerging sustainable foods movement. Any chance Mississippi Market would consider hosting future meetings at the new store where there is substantially more parking?

Thanks Blake - I promise you more, different locations. As for your particular request, MS Market will have to weigh in.

Hi Blake--

Yes-we are planning the March installment to be at the West 7th Store. Nothing like spreading the love (and the parking) around! We can talk more about it at the first meeting.

What a great idea. I'd love to get a Simple, Good and Tasty book group together here in Bemidji to read and discuss the book using your book notes and talking points. "Food Rules" is an easy-read, full of practical information. Good choice.
