Thanks for the note, Michelle. Laura and I read Fast Food Nation just before we gave up meat for a year. We should have read it again before we started eating meat again ;-). You are so right about this stuff, as usual, and it's a great quote. Thanks for reading the post and writing! Come to our local food meal at the Craftsman on 4/14. I'll send you details. :-)
Agreed, Lee--legislation is way too slow when it comes to the humane treatment of animals. There's too many people that don't think/care/want to know about the animal that is now their food...a little more education about the food cycle is crucial. One thing at a time, I guess. Don't remember if you said you'd read Fast Food Nation, or not, but mistreatment of livestock is a big part of the book. As with most things in America--the meat processing industry grew too big, too fast.
The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but rather, "Can they suffer?" ~Jeremy Bentham
Thought this posting was interesting - one of our newsletters from Harmony Valley Farm (October 30, 2008) featured an excerpt from an October 12 New York Times article by Michael Pollan called "Farmer-in-Chief". I assume you've read/heard about the article? I haven't read the original, but the excerpt that Harmony Valley printed was very interesting. Perhaps the Obamas are fans of Pollan. You can find copies of their newsletters on their website.
Lee-
We're big fans of Michael Pollan. He really has brought some great issues to the general public. By being a "normal" guy; not a producer, distributor or otherwise connected to the food industry he really has helped a lot of people better understand food culture in layman's terms.
For a more in depth (if frightening) look at agribusiness, try "The End of Food" by Paul Roberts.
Fabulous site - thanks for putting it together! The more we all talk, the more people will realize it is time for a change!
