One more thing to consider: as a CSA member, you're partnering with the farm, so you ride the highs and lows of production with them. Last summer the CSA I joined had trouble with weeds and pests, and some crops, like carrots, did poorly, so we received little (or none) of those vegetables. The farm owners were anxious that we have a good experience, of course, and were generous with their bounty of green leafy vegetables, but it's important to remember that you might have to be flexible in your expectations.
I have great recipes for kale, potato, and hot pepper soup and swiss chard pie if you want them.
we actually purchased a "freezer pack" from our csa a year ago, it was somthing like 50 lbs of varying cuts, and was ok, but a little tough. In doing research, I determined it was because the meat was frozen. We've since just purchase our beef from the local butcher, Everets Foods at 38th and cedar. They claim that all their beef is from local farms, the down side is that we don't know about the farm's practices. The beef does taste much better.
