Resolutions From A Food Lover In Fargo

As a grade-schooler, emerging as a type-A adult, I carefully crafted New Years resolutions of all types and crossed them out when attained. I thought I had all but given up on New Years resolutions--until I moved to Fargo. For the first time in 15 years, I compiled a list of 2012 New Years resolutions, all of which revolve around food.

In 2012, I will learn how to create the following in my humble apartment kitchen:

Venison & Mash: One Girl's Love for this Minnesota Meat

It's that time of year again, deer-hunting season is wrapping up. Thousands of Minnesotan's brave the frosty-cold mornings to sit in tree-stands and ground-blinds each year and wait for a big buck or nice doe to come into range. Through intimate, often funny, sometimes painful, always entertaining, personal stories, we'll witness exactly what happens when this extraordinary food-focused experiment unfolds. The 100 Mile Challenge will get all of Canada talking about what we eat and where exactly it comes from.

Great Article on Locally Produced Meat

citizen-timesFrom Asheville's Citizen Times today comes a terrific article on the benefits of knowing where your food comes from as well as the cost of buying locally. Here's a quote:

“People are so disconnected from farms nowadays that they desperately want a relationship with a farm,” said Jamie Ager, who with his wife, Amy, runs Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, where their meat operations have enjoyed annual growth rates of about 20 percent since they started eight years ago. “It's almost like an innate thing — you need to have this relationship with the land, and we help provide that relationship.”
