Announcing SGT's July Local Food Event: Dinner on the Deck at The Marsh

I live in Minneapolis, and I'll admit that sometimes I can be a snob about it. When my in-laws tell me about some "fantastic" Italian restaurant they've discovered in the northern suburbs, for example, my first instinct isn't to jump in the car and drive to Anoka, but to rattle off the places in Minneapolis that are -- obviously, I assume -- both closer and tastier. As a rule, if I'm going to drive more than 20 miles from my house, it's going to be to visit a farm, enjoy a weekend away, or visit a family member I really, really love. Like I said, I'm a snob.

So I was as surprised as you might be to learn that  The Marsh, located in the western suburb of Minnetonka (just past Highway 494 on Minnetonka Boulevard), was worth the drive. Since I first met executive chef David Owen-Jones and restaurant manager Jorge Correa to discuss The Marsh's approach to food, I've eaten there several times, surprised and delighted to see all sorts of local and organic food on the menu. I've enjoyed tasty bison burgers, salmon salad, chicken and bean quesadillas, and lots more.

Although the food is quite good, what makes The Marsh the ideal location for Simple, Good, and Tasty's July event is the fact that its restaurant -- and the beautiful deck overlooking acres of wetlands, trees and wildlife -- is located adjacent to a wellness center. If the combination of the words wellness center (or health club) and food conjures up images of protein drinks, energy bars, and informercials, you are forgiven -- but in this case you'd be wrong. The Marsh's approach includes thoughtful sourcing, sustainability, and whole foods.

For our July local food event, focused on good food and health, we've asked Sean Jones, Culinary Arts instructor at St. Paul College, to speak about the importance of understanding where our food comes from, as well. Then, together, we can discuss why it matters.

This wil be an event well worth driving to the suburbs for. (It's actually only 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis.) Here are the rest of the details:
