Pomme de Terre Food Co-op

According to Jessi Gurr - Pomme de Terre Foods (PDT) was started in 1971, and is a community-oriented co-op. Nestled in the beautiful heart of Western Minnesota (think wide swathes of prairie, small lively towns, generational family farms, and long glistening lakes), we view our surroundings as both inspiration and substantive pillars. Our community is Morris, prairie town of 5,000, and home to the acclaimed University of Minnesota, Morris. PDT Foods is not-for-profit, which means all the money we accrue (if any!) goes right back to improving the store. The store has only one paid employee, the manager; all other workers are volunteers: hardy dedicated souls willing to donate a couple hours every week to keep the store going. It is to them that the store really owes its survival. The manager makes the day to day decisions, while our board of directors wrestles with larger issues. Our motto has always been: "Going Out of Business Since 1971." And for many years this statement was verifiably true. Numerous times it was only the passion, generosity, and idealism of various individuals that kept us afloat. Our current financial stability is a testament to them, and their dream of providing the area with an alternative in grocery shopping. Having survived nearly thirty-five years of crises and upheaval, we view PDT Foods as a testament to idealism. To us it is proof of what community-minded citizens can achieve when they band together with a common goal, and a belief in a better world??one step at a time.
