ICK! haven't eaten institutional food since college, where even though we complained about lack of choices i was mostly vegetarian so i stayed away from the worst of it, it sounds like.....
my grandmother was a baker for the school cafeteria. yes, believe it or not, up until about 30 years ago they actually baked FRESH BREAD in a school cafeteria. both of my parents and both of my siblings are teachers, and they try (tried) to stay away from buying food at the school except for the 'home cooked' favorites.
i am very interested to see jamie oliver's upcoming show, looks like he goes to a school to enlighten the kids and teachers about what they are actually eating....should be interesting!
I loved this article, what a great glimpse into small town life and your journey into beekeeping. Your passion is pretty obvious for these little creatures.
Thanks for the great education on bees in winter in Minnesota. I love that you do Maple Sap collecting too. Have you all tapped your Maple Trees yet, and is the sap runninga?
I partially agree. But, one does have to be more scientific than to just criticize a well documented wealth of evidence that show contrary results. So, before you turn everyone off you must show the evidence. A gut feeling is just that - nothing more.
I do believe that there is a balance to all phases of our lives and we need to keep our planet as uncontaminated as possible. But, let's not jump from the skillet into the fire because someone thinks they know what is right. Prove it to make yourself believable. I've seen too many people jump on the wagon of an idea that seems plausible and that we would like to believe, only to find that the end result was worse.
Prove it. That is the only logical way to get reasonable people to believe.
yay - i turned into a major honeybee fan last year learning about them for SGT at the state fair. such amazing creatures. thank you for filling us in on the winter goings-on!

So glad that you all find
So glad that you all find honeybees as fascinating as I do! I have found beekeeping to be very rewarding - and challenging - on so many levels.
Yes indeed, we are now tapping the trees and will have all 500 taps out next weekend. The maple syrup adventure for 2010 is about to begin!

Very nice description of wintering of honeybees!
Clear, concise and most interesting! I like the way you think "outside the bee box" - so to speak!!!
Good luck this season and every season thereafter!
