For September's Simple, Good, and Tasty local food dinner, we're trying something a little bit different - the biggest, best, funnest local food potluck and pig roast that the Twin Cities has ever seen. SGT will provide the pig - you bring your family, friends, and a dish to share. This is a great, inexpensive opportunity to meet local food enthusiasts, cook up your CSA/farmshare bounty, and eat great food.
The meal will be held at Minneapolis' Boom Island Park. Boom Island is conveniently located near downtown (724 Sibley St. NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413), and features a playground and great views of downtown Minneapolis.
Tickets for the event cost only $10 (to cover the cost of the pig and the park shelter), and kids are free. Because this event requires an upfront investment on the part of SGT, we're asking attendees to pay in advance, using PayPal's secure web service. You can do that right here:
Due to park restrictions, the only alcohol allowed will be 3.2 beer in cans, which we'll be selling for $2 a piece.
Why a Pig Roast and Potluck?
I'm not a native Minnesotan, but I'm totally sold on a few of our state's more traditional celebrations. What could be more Minnesotan than a pig roast? Or more evocative than a potluck? These events are known for bringing people of all kinds of people together, for including families and friends, and for being completely inclusive. That's exactly what local, sustainable food needs to be.
For those who are nervous about the pig, please know that my good friend Dave Micko, terrific chef and great guy, will be doing the cooking. He does several pig roasts a year (much garlic is usually involved), and is expert at making them tasty. The pig itself will be purchased from Clancy's Meats, a local meat market in Minneapolis, and will come from Tim Fischer's Fischer Farms, located in Waseca, MN. The pig will be roasted in a roaster, so there'll be no spit, no apple in its mouth.
The Potluck
Potlucks are as Minnesotan as loons and 6 month winters. They are a great way to bring the community together, and a fun way to try new foods. This event gives everyone the chance to show off family traditions and CSA recipes. When else have you made a dish of local food and put it out on a table alongside food from your favorite chefs in town? This is your chance.
The Logistics
SGT will provide the pig, non-alcoholic beverages, plates, and flatware. The Linden Hills Co-op has already generously donated enough chips to feed an army. Per park restrictions, we'll be selling 3.2 beer in cans for $2 each.
